About seven residents of the Brightshade community in Clay County were rescued Wednesday after they were stranded by high water, emergency management officials said.

The residents realized they were stranded at 11 a.m. and were rescued by 1 p.m. by firefighters from local departments, Clay Emergency Management Director David Watson said. There were no reported injuries, Watson said.

Kentucky Emergency Management spokesman Buddy Rogers reported flooding in several Eastern Kentucky counties as a result of heavy rains that moved across Kentucky Tuesday night.

Flooding was reported in Clay, Knox, Laurel, Harlan, Leslie and Owsley counties, he said. Clay, Owsley and Harlan counties declared local states of emergency, and Harlan County experienced mudslides and several flooded roads, he said.
